Independent Publishing? Yes, Please!

I could have done with more of this kind of information when I started as an Indie Author ten years ago.

If you’ve finally made up your mind to move from traditional publishing to Indie, you’ve made a wise decision. And I’ll tell you why:

  • you have total control of just about every aspect of publishing

    • your cover art

    • price of book

    • ability to promote via price

    • who stocks your book

    • what formats you publish in

    • digital PR and other marketing

    • you keep your rights

    • you can hire in the editor/cover artist/formatter/etc, that you prefer

    • you can licence anything you like or that you don’t know how best to exploit. When a publisher holds the rights they get to decide. And seldom exploit anything but the obvious

  • you can join The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), which is a terrific organisation

  • you can band together with other Indies to publish a novel collection and share readers/fans

You have a level playing field

A publisher will give very little money, time or attention to you. Not if you are a Mid-list author. Which, let’s face it, most of us are, or were.

He has no money to spend on you. Not when he is lavishing vast sums on his bestselling authors.

I’ve been there, so I know what it’s like.

After a few years, when nothing improves, you feel jaded. You’re on a conveyor belt of deadlines to nowhere. And no hope of anything better at the end of it. No wonder you feel jaded.

All the excitement you felt when you were first published has long since gone. You’re probably even losing your love of words. I know I was.

Are you going to go on like that?

Year after year? Book after book?

Or are you going to strike out on your own and find FREEDOM?

So unlock those chains that are holding you back.

You’ve nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

Okay, the publisher might refuse to release your rights, or force you to buy them back at a steep price.

But if, as is so often the case, they’re doing little with them anyway, wouldn’t you be better off publishing your next book as an Indie, rather than giving him another hostage to fortune?

At least then a publisher won’t be able to hold you to ransom.

At least then you could earn more than the paltry amount most publishers offer

And another benefit. Indies help one another. Don’t believe me? Go to kboards.com/writers-cafe

Game of Bones #18 Rafferty and Llewellyn mystery series. Last Day @ 99c

SERIES REVIEWS

‘Darn good read.’

‘Thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. Great characters and story-line.’

Sergeant Llewellyn’s remark that, perhaps, ‘Someone else’ had made them a gift of Professor Babbington as the murderer, was just sour grapes, in Detective Joe Rafferty’s opinion.

But Llewellyn had planted a tiny doubt where none had existed before. Rafferty, convinced in his own mind that they had the right culprit for the murder of University Administrator, Rupert Hunter-York, forced himself to disregard Llewellyn, who was known to greatly admire Babbington. They had so much proof it was embarrassing: Babbington’s fingerprints on the murder weapon; the victim’s blood on his shirt; and his DNA on the dead man.

So Rafferty couldn’t believe it when his ‘sure thing’ slowly began to unravel. He refused to admit his growing doubts about Babbington’s guilt to Llewellyn, who continued to champion the professor, and was as convinced of Babbington’s innocence as Rafferty was of his culpability.

But then they discovered surprising new evidence, and all Rafferty’s certainty vanished into dust. He prepared himself to face the music when Superintendent Bradley came back from his expensive holiday, to find that the ‘sure thing’ he had left with Rafferty, had inexplicably become anything but.

Unless Joe Rafferty could find some way to turn defeat into triumph
